NBA 2K27 Gameplay Overhaul: Two-Way Balance, ProPLAY, and a Revamped Takeover System

Over 7,000 new ProPLAY animations, step-through up-and-unders, 29-part dribble customization, hands-up defense, color-coded contests, and a six-tier Takeover system headline NBA 2K27's on-court changes.

Visual Concepts is pitching NBA 2K27 as a balanced two-way era — offensive creativity without leaving defense behind. The August 18, 2026 Courtside Report, presented by Philadelphia 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey and Gameplay Director Mike Wang, outlined the biggest on-court changes powered by over 7,000 new ProPLAY animations.

Offensive upgrades

Step-through up-and-unders

For the first time, players can replicate the step-through up-and-under move used by stars like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Anthony Edwards, and Luka Dončić to create clean separation in the mid-range.

Expanded dribble customization

Signature dribble packages are now broken into 29 individual, decoupled movements. Mix and match to build personalized attack combinations rather than being locked into preset packages.

Dynamic Layup Engine and Dunk Meter

The Dynamic Layup Engine adjusts finishing animations mid-air for cleaner layups. The logic-driven Dunk Meter produces more realistic dunk outcomes based on approach angle, defender position, and ratings.

Defensive rework

Defense gets equal attention this year:

  • Hands-up defense lets you contest more aggressively or conservatively
  • A color-coded contest system shows contest quality and direction
  • Expanded defensive cutoffs help skilled defenders stay with explosive dribble combos
  • Ankle breakers are now skill-based and logic-driven for the first time
  • A new ball collision system weighs both players’ ratings to determine whether contact jars the ball loose

Revamped Takeover System

Takeover is rebuilt around five disciplines: Shooting, Finishing, Playmaking, Defense, and Rebounding. Each discipline has its own meter that rises and falls with in-game performance, scaling across six tiers. Max out a discipline’s meter and your equipped Takeover Ability triggers automatically.

Rhythm shooting and advanced controls

Rhythm Shooting returns with a Shot Meter tick mark synced to Pro Stick movement. Community feedback drove a key change: green timing is now strictly required for successful Rhythm shots. Rhythm Shooting also expands to the free-throw line.

Advanced Controls add precision for breakdowns on the move, no-look passes, and intuitive alley-oops.

AI and coaching

Computer players get improved basketball IQ with a new Set AI framework that keeps facilitators like Nikola Jokić at the offense’s hub. Team-level gameplans adapt in real time, and Enhanced Matchup Switching brings more fluid defensive coverage.
