Mike Wang: Legacy Dunk Ball-Slip on Defender Collision Is on the Fix List
Gameplay Director Mike Wang (@Beluba) explained Aug 29 that a legacy feature can make the ball slip out of a dunker's hand on defender collision — conflicting with timed dunks and the dunk meter. He said it needs removal; not listed in Patch 1.3.

A clip of a dunker losing the ball mid-animation sparked a familiar Early Access question: was the dunk meter wrong, or did something else strip the finish? Wang answered with a straight diagnosis — a legacy collision feature, not a random meter fail.
What Wang said
On August 29 (~1:36 AM ET), Wang posted:
there’s a legacy feature that makes the ball “slip” out of the dunker’s hand sometimes when he collides with a defender. that’s what happened here. now that all dunks are timed, this feature needs to be removed to avoid sending users mixed messages with the dunk meter. it’s on our fix list.
Read that in two parts:
- The slip is intentional legacy code — defender collision can force the ball out of the dunker’s hands independent of whether you timed the dunk correctly.
- Timed dunks make it a problem — with every dunk on the meter in 2K27, a collision-driven strip reads like the timing system failed. Wang says the feature needs to be removed so feedback stays consistent.
He placed it on the fix list. That is not the same as shipped. Patch 1.3 (Aug 31) does not mention dunks or this collision slip — do not assume it is already patched.
Practical takeaway
If you green a dunk and still lose the ball on heavy contact, Wang’s explanation points to collision logic fighting the new meter — not necessarily your input. Until a fix lands, treat those strips as a known friction point between old collision behavior and timed dunking.
