Mike Wang on 2K27 Shooting: Lower Make % Than 2K26, Lab Before Locking Ratings, and Height vs Perimeter Defense Contests

Gameplay Director Mike Wang (@Beluba) said most players will shoot a lower percentage in NBA 2K27 than 2K26 after defensive improvements — and urged labbing in the test builder or Play Now before locking shot ratings. He also broke down how height, Perimeter Defense, and Block interact on jump shot contests, confirmed Takeover on NBA/WNBA rosters, and noted easier Rookie offline play.

Late on August 22 into August 23 (UTC), Wang answered community questions about how harder defense will land on shooting percentages, what actually drives jump shot contests, and a few offline and roster-mode details. These replies extend his earlier shooting and blocking clarifications and the Aug 22 Gameplay Q&A — without repeating green-or-miss mechanics or Takeover meter reset.

Lab your shot ratings before you lock the build

A player asked whether an 80 three-point rating is enough to make jump shots consistently. Wang did not give a yes or no on that number. Instead, he framed consistency as a bundle of player skill and context:

This will completely depend on your stick skills, playstyle, shot IQ, and which game mode you’re in. I would highly suggest labbing in the test builder or even PlayNow before locking in your shot ratings. The vast majority are going to shoot a lower % this year compared to 2K26 with the improvements we’ve made to defense.

That last line is the headline for build planners: overall make percentage should drop for most players relative to 2K26, driven by defensive upgrades rather than a silent nerf to green windows alone. Wang’s practical advice is to test in the MyPLAYER test builder or Play Now before committing attribute points or badge layouts — especially if you are chasing a specific three-point threshold.

The same weekend, Wang also confirmed that dropping shot ratings shrinks the green window — separate from the make-rate point above, but part of the same “don’t assume last year’s numbers” message. See the shooting deep dive for how ratings, badges, and defense feed window size.

Contests: height beats Perimeter D on mismatches; Block needs a jump

Wang spent several replies unpacking how height, Perimeter Defense, and Block interact when a defender contests a jump shot — a layer the Courtside Report overhaul previewed with shot-coverage tiers but did not spell out attribute-by-attribute.

Height vs Perimeter Defense

On whether height or Perimeter Defense matters more for jump shot contests, Wang said height is the stronger factor — but Perimeter Defense still carries significant weight. A high Perimeter Defense rating cannot fully rescue a defender who is badly mismatched in height or positioning. The relationship is a sliding scale, and Wang noted that a deep analytics-style answer is hard to give in a tweet.

Block vs Perimeter Defense in the impact calculation

In a separate thread, Wang distinguished Block from Perimeter Defense more sharply:

  • Block helps the defender target the ball better, which makes contests stronger by nature when the player actually jumps.
  • Perimeter Defense is, by far, the much stronger factor in the actual defensive impact calculation.

So Block is not the primary rating driving contest outcomes — but it matters when you use it correctly.

“Just jumping” is not enough without Block investment

When a player suggested defenders could contest by “just jumping at shooters,” Wang replied bluntly: the Block rating does nothing for you if you don’t jump. Passive closeouts without a contest action do not leverage Block; you need to commit the jump for that attribute to matter.

Together, these posts suggest a contest hierarchy for jumpers: size and positioning set the floor, Perimeter Defense drives most of the math, and Block amplifies active jump contests — not idle hands-up defense.

Takeover on NBA and WNBA rosters in Play Now and league modes

Wang confirmed that NBA and WNBA players in their respective modes — Play Now and the league experiences tied to each roster — use the new Takeover system. A formula based on each player’s ratings auto-assigns takeover abilities aligned with their strengths.

That is separate from MyPLAYER Takeover tuning in the builder. For offline roster play, you do not hand-pick badges; the game maps strengths to disciplines. For how active Takeover resets after a burst in MyPLAYER, see the Aug 22 Q&A on Warm/Hot reset.

Offline and casual options

Wang closed the weekend with reassurance for lower-difficulty and timing-averse offline players:

  • Rookie is significantly easier than last year — you can still play on Rookie if you want a lighter experience.
  • Offline, you can use real player percentages and disable layup/dunk timing.
  • Layups are broken up the same way as in 2K26 (one-line confirmation).

Treat this as a sidebar for casual offline runs, not the competitive meta story. The competitive through-line remains: lab your build, expect lower make rates than 2K26 at parity difficulty, and read contests through height, Perimeter Defense, and active Block jumps.
